How To Exchange Your RCI Timeshare To The 5 Best Resorts in Los Cabos

Arch of Cabo San Lucas

At the tip of the longest peninsula in the world sits a one of the best vacation destinations for timeshare owners.  It’s called Los Cabos and consists of the widely known party and fishing town of Cabo San Lucas and it’s lesser known and quieter sister, San Jose del Cabo.

What to do first

You must decide where you’ll be the happiest.  Whichever town you end up in you’ll most likely want to visit the other.  They are 30 kilometers apart separated by the “tourist corridor” that contains spectacular golf courses, hotels and residential developments.

Both towns offer excellent access to fine dining, fishing, shopping, night life and world class beaches but they are different as night and day.  San Jose is as quaint and charming as Cabo San Lucas is wild and crazy.  If you’re looking for a party then Cabo San Lucas is your town.  If you’re looking for what you’d expect a town in Mexico to look like and a more peaceful setting then San Jose is best.

Determine the time of year you’d like to go

Sometimes the best way to start is to determine the time of the year not to go.  For Los Cabos, and any tropical coastal area in the northern hemisphere including Hawaii, avoid the month of September-especially the second and third weeks.  This is the time you will most likely encounter a hurricane or tropical storm and there is no need to risk a spoiled vacation because of it.  Coincidently, you’ll find much greater timeshare exchange availability and some of the best travel bargains in September.

Officially, hurricane season runs from May to November but cutting out all of those months may not fit your vacation schedule so if you have to go during that time, just avoid September.

If whale watching is what you desire, the season runs from December through May with February and March typically being the best months.  This is a great time for just about any other activity other than fishing for Blue Marlin which is best in the summer months.

You’ll find greater visibilities for snorkeling and scuba from November to May because the ocean is calmer, but you’ll find the water a bit cooler than the summer months.

Bank or deposit your week with RCI

The earlier you bank your week with RCI the more trading power you have.  If you have a fixed week, make sure you bank it at least 7 months in advance or more to strengthen your exchange power.

If you have a floating or points based timeshare, ask your resort to deposit the most powerful week available.  Not all resorts will do this but it’s worth asking.  Also, you should always deposit your next year’s week this year if you know you will not be using it at your home resort.  You’ll have to pay the maintenance fee in advance to do this but it’s worth the extra exchange power.

Determine the size suite to fit your needs

Do you have to have a 2 bedroom or will a 1 bedroom suffice?  1 bedroom suites are easier to get and nearly all of them in RCI sleep 4 and have 1 bathroom. 2 bedroom suites are typically scarcer so you should plan farther ahead.  A secret that most timeshare owners don’t know to do is to call the resort or ask RCI how many 2 bedroom suites come out of the resorts your requesting during the time of the year you want to go.  If there are many then obviously your chances are great.  If there are only a few then you should let RCI know that you’ll take either a 1 bedroom of a 2 bedroom.

Call RCI and start your search

How far in advance you should request depends on many different factors and will differ with each timeshare owner.  If you own a very powerful exchanging timeshare and you’re requesting shoulder or off season, it’s possible you’ll be confirmed when you request.  Most likely however, there will already be a waiting list to get into the top 5 resorts so as a rule of thumb you should request as far in advance as possible.  In addition, you’ll want to include all 5 top RCI resorts and a span of time of 4-8 weeks.  This will increase your chances getting confirmed significantly.

RCI’s 5 best resorts in Los Cabos

In picking the 5 best resorts one of the criteria was exchange availability. Although The Grand Regina Los Cabos is certainly one of the best resorts anywhere in RCI, the chances of getting in are remote so it did not make the list.  Here they are in no particular order:

Fiesta Americana Vacation Club at Cabo del Sol

Hacienda del Mar Resort

Pueblo Bonito at Sunset Beach

Raintree’s Club Regina Los Cabos

Playa Grande Resort

New Welk Timeshare Resort in Cabo San Lucas-Sirena del Mar

Interval International, a leading global provider of vacation services and an operating segment of Interval Leisure Group (Nasdaq:IILG), yesterday announced that Welk Resorts Cabo – Sirena del Mar has joined its vacation exchange network. Overlooking the Sea of Cortez near Cabo San Lucas, Mexico, this is the first international location in the Welk Resorts portfolio launched by legendary entertainer Lawrence Welk.

“Those familiar with the Welk history know that we strive to ensure whatever we do at our resorts is done with the highest quality standards,” said Jon Fredricks, president of Welk Resorts. “Welk Resorts Cabo – Sirena del Mar, the newest addition to our family of resorts, clearly exemplifies this commitment to excellence.”

Craig M. Nash, chairman, president, and chief executive officer of Interval Leisure Group, parent company of Interval International, added, “We are very proud to welcome Welk Resorts Cabo – Sirena del Mar, Welk’s sixth property, to Interval’s worldwide network. The resort’s stunning location and full range of amenities carry on the tradition of quality that has made Welk Resorts one of the most respected independent brands in the vacation ownership industry.”

Set on a 65-foot bluff near the popular resort town of Cabo San Lucas on the tip of the Baja California peninsula, Welk Resorts Cabo – Sirena del Mar is being built in tiers to maximize its panoramic views of the Sea of Cortez and El Arco, the landmark stone arch. There are two pools on the seven-acre property and cascading decks have wet wall water features, a vanishing edge waterfall and spa, thatched palapas, and a fire pit. At the rim of the seaside cliff, a spiral staircase leads to a swimmable cove beach.

While the setting may be a world away from other resorts in the Welk Resorts portfolio — including the Welk Resort north of the San Diego suburb of Escondido, the 400-acre flagship property, and the Ozark Mountain-themed Timber Ridge Lodge in the heart of family-friendly Branson, Missouri — the quality and flexible, points-based product is very familiar to more than 43,000 owners at Welk Resorts. Sixteen of the 20 two-bedroom villas in phase one of Welk Resorts Cabo – Sirena del Mar are lock-off units, adding another layer of flexibility. (The remaining four units are two-bedroom penthouses.) The build out is scheduled to progress in five phases for a total of 222 units with a range of configurations, including one-bedroom junior suites.

All units will include luxury amenities such as whirlpool tubs, stainless appliances, multiple flat screen TVs, complimentary Internet access, and pillow-top king-sized beds.

Phase one owners and guests will be able to enjoy a range of on-site amenities including two outdoor pools (one with a swim-up bar), a fitness center, game room, an owner’s lounge and shop selling beverages and sundries. Just five minutes from the property, Cabo San Lucas offers the full spectrum of shopping, dining, golf and water sports.

American Idol Star and Cabo San Lucas Timeshares

Saturday, January 9th, 2010

Cabo San Lucas' El Arco

Katharine McPhee, runner up in Season 5 of American Idol, says her favorite places to relax are Cabo San Lucas, Mexico timeshares. Her heavy-duty travel schedule keeps her in and out of hotels, many of which this self-professed “clean freak” says she re-cleans herself because they do not meet her standards. Explaining that she always removes the spreads and blankets and relegate them to the closet, McPhee adds that she sometimes uses the hotel towels to cover a dirty floor or carpet.

It seems, however, that timeshares suit the singing star much better. In an article published by Showbiz Spy, McPhee says her favorite resort destination is, “Cabo (San Lucas, Mexico) because it’s two hours from my home in Los Angeles and you feel like you are in a different world. It’s quick and easy and I love the restaurants. My family has a timeshare so I try and get down there at least once per year.”

“Lying on the beach or sitting by the pool is so amazing. Every once in a while I will rent jet skis. There is nothing quite like jet skiing on the open ocean.”

Katharine is not alone in her love of Mexico timeshares; many vacationers believe them to be some of the most beautiful resorts in the world. And you have it straight from a clean freak that although many hotels fail to live up to her standards, her favorite Mexico timeshare is an ideal place to vacation and relax.

The newest resort to open in Cabo is Welk Resorts “Sirena del Mar”.  They grabbed about the last piece of ocean front left in the coveted corridor area some years ago and just opened 35 of 200 units.  It sits 3 miles from the town of Cabo San Lucas and all of the first phase units have ocean front views.  In fact, because of its location, not only can you hear whales spout from the pool area, but at this time of year you can see both sunrise and sunset.

Welk has deposited some exchange weeks into Interval International but don’t expect them to last long.  Nor will there be many weeks from their Cabo resort deposited in the future since Welk went to a club system with internal points like Disney Vacation Club and Hyatt Vacation Club.

Make sure you maximize your exchange power and request far in advance if you want to get a timeshare exchange into the beautiful new resort.

RCI TV: New Timeshare Exchange Tool

Wednesday, July 29th, 2009
Sunset in Cabo San Lucas
Image via Wikipedia

RCI has just launched a great new resource that will help you greatly with planning your timeshare exchange.  It’s called RCI TV.  It’s a new and innovative technology that enhances member experience by delivering important information by way of video.

RCI TV offers an entertaining and educational network filled with stories about RCI, products and services, and travel and resort information.

It’s hosted by the likable “Dan The RCI Guy” and consists of different channels you can click on to get more information.  As of now the 5 channels consist of; 35th Anniversary, Meet RCI, New Releases, Previews and Destination Reviews.   Unless you want promotional and background information about RCI you can forego the first two channels.

The New Releases channel demonstrates how to use RCI’s new search feature, Enhanced Search.    Enhanced Search has radically changed the online experience by providing members with a broad view of real time exchange vacations available to them and the ability to search using filters to help find the exact vacation experience they want.

On the Preview channel Dan talks about new features to expect in the near future.  Some nice enhancements to come are email notifications of the status of your current search, instant confirmations, side by side comparison or two resorts at once and personal resort recommendations based on your previous exchanges.

On the Destination Reviews channel you’ll find excellent recommendations of things to do on your timeshare exchange in different vacation areas.  Each video is only about 5 minutes long, shot in HD and worthy of being on The Travel Channel.

Currently there are 14 different vacation destinations with many more to come.  The videos on Hilton Head Island and Cabo San Lucas, two places I’ve lived and worked, included most everything I would recommend to someone headed there.

There will be a new channel called “Resort Showcase” to show off different resorts in HD.  They currently have 50 resorts signed up but the channel is not live yet.  This will be a great resource to use when doing a timeshare exchange, especially now that you’re able to see availability real time.  Now, instead of seeing a few old photos of a resort you’re interested in, you’ll be able to see new HD videos of the resort.

Here’s what the president and CEO of RCI had to say:

“The response to RCI TV and our Resort Showcase channel has been overwhelmingly positive. The response in Mexico alone was so tremendous that we were asked by both developers and the Government in that great ‘vacation nation’ to develop a destination promotion along with an all-inclusive channel to help spotlight the many features that the all-inclusive resorts there have to offer.  This is just one more way that we are working to support and promote our affiliates worldwide.”

When doing a timeshare exchange we need all of the help we can get and RCI TV promises to be a very useful tool.

Interval International Adds Grand SolMar in Cabo San Lucas

Tuesday, April 21st, 2009

Interval International has announced that it will add the Grand SolMar resort in Cabo San Lucas to its portfolio.  Scheduled to begin construction in March, the oceanfront resort will be adjacent to the renowned Arch of Los Cabos at the southernmost tip of the Baja Peninsula.

Grand Sol Mar

According to Perspective Magazine, “Grand SolMar will include 250 villas with unobstructed views of the Pacific Ocean and its landscaped gardens upon completion. Phase I of the project will include 104 units that are scheduled for occupancy in winter 2011 and phase II, which will have 96 additional units, is expected to be completed two years later. The final phase, with 50 units, is slated for occupancy in winter 2015.”

I worked for the SolMar group when I lived in Cabo some years ago and you can expect the Grand SolMar to be one of finest timeshares in II when it opens if they stay true to form.  And I’m sure they will.

They started developing timeshare many years ago with one of my favorite resorts in Cabo, the Sol Mar Beach Club Resort as an addition to their already famous hotel.  To this day the Sol Mar Beach Club is my choice of timeshare resorts to exchange to.  It’s small and quiet and very well maintained and is affiliated with RCI.

The SolMar group next built the beautiful Playa Grande just up the beach from the Sol Mar and is an exceptional resort to exchange to.  It is bigger, has more amenities and definitely has the resort feel to it.

It’s been a while since I’ve been to Cabo but you shouldn’t expect to find the crime and violence that’s occurring in the border towns near the US.  The Sol Mar Beach Club used to have 24 hour security although I never felt it needed it.  If you’re concerned you should call the resort directly and ask.

What you do need to be aware of is the very dangerous beach the Sol Mar Resorts are on.  The beach is definitely not recommended for swimming.  Many people have drowned there, so be warned.  It is, however,  one of the best beaches in the world from which to watch whales.  Best time for that is February and March.

More on this in the next post.

Christmas Vacation 2009

Tuesday, October 28th, 2008

It’s not even Thanksgiving and believe it or not, it’s already time for those of you who want to take a timeshare Christmas Vacation in 2009 to get that request going.

The timeshares having the most demand will be located in ski areas in Colorado like Telluride, Aspen, Vail or Beaver CreekLake Tahoe and Whistler British Columbia will have far more requests than available weeks as well.

Warm beach areas like Hawaii, Cabo San Lucas, Puerto Vallarta, Cancun and the Caribbean will be very high demand as well.

One of the biggest challenges you’ll ever face when exchanging is trying to get a holiday.  Your competition, the people who do get holidays, are the savviest exchangers in the industry.

While you don’t necessarily need to own a Premier or Gold Crown resort on the beach in Maui to exchange for a holiday week, you do need to know both how to maximize your exchange power, and just as important, how to strategically put in that request.

In a series of short articles I’ll give you some great insider trading secrets to help you get to where you want to go.

That’s all for now.  More tips in the next post.

Cabo San Lucas Whale Watching Part 3

Saturday, January 5th, 2008

For those of you that do end up in Cabo San Lucas and the Los Cabos area for whale watching I recommend that you add on a few extra days and arrange a trip to Magdalena Bay 4-5 hours north of Cabo.

This is one of the 3 bays that the California Gray Whales breed and calve on the Baja Peninsula.  It’s here where you will not only witness one of the largest congregations of whales anywhere, but also have the chance, if you’re lucky, to pet a baby whale from you boat.  There is no guarantee you’ll be able to pet one but just being on the water with so many whales is incredible.

On my third trip to Magdalena Bay I petted a baby off and on for 30 minutes while the 40 foot long mother observed nearby.  It ranks as one of the best all time life experiences I ever enjoyed.

Seeing them is one thing but touching them is another.  The whales that can be petted are called “amistosos” or friendlies.  The Mexican government has gone to great lengths to regulate whale watching here and they are in no way harassed or stressed.  Biologists have witnessed this experience form many years but can’t explain it.

Since the best time to see them is in the morning I’d make a 2 day trip of it.  There are escorted tours by van or you can fly in (expensive) or, if adventurous, rent a car and drive.  I prefer the latter.  There is a good 2 lane highway all the way there and you need not worry about banditos in peaceful Baja.

You’ll want to arrange for accommodations in the Magdalena Bay area before you leave Cabo because they fill up during whale watching season.  You can do that before you go to Cabo, preferable, or have your activities director at your timeshare resort help you.

In fact, once you’ve reserved your week you can call the front desk and arrange the trip before hand.  Make sure to bring something warm to wear as the weather can be much cooler than sunny Cabo.

If you can’t pick up one of RCI’s Last Call weeks between now and February, and you’d like to see the whales next year, put in your exchange request now.  The greatest demand for Cabo San Lucas and Los Cabos is between Christmas and Easter so exchange availability is limited.

Even though there are no major brand name timeshares like Marriott, Disney or Hyatt, yet, in Cabo San Lucas, many of the resorts listed in RCI and Interval International are of superior quality and right on the beach.

The Club Regina at the Westin is a beautiful resort on the beach near San Jose del Cabo.  You’ll find it in RCI.

Cabo San Lucas Whale Watching Part 2

Friday, January 4th, 2008

There’s still over 100 units left in Cabo San Lucas between now and February 17 on RCI’s Last Call list.  If you do grab a week in paradise to go see the California Gray whales I recommend that you do a sunset dinner cruise instead of a whale watching cruise.  That way you get to eat, drink and watch sunset while the whales are entertaining you.  And they really do put on a show.

Some stand on their head and wave their tail, others roll on their side and wave a flipper and some spy hop, or stick just their head out of the water to take a look around.  If you’re lucky, you’ll get to see a breach.  Usually it’s the big males that do the breaching.  To see a 45 foot long, 40,000 pound whale throw himself three quarters of the way out of the water landing on his back is something you’ll never forget.

Don’t forget, you don’t have to exchange your timeshare to get a Last Call week.  Grab one and go see something incredible that very few people in the world will ever experience.

Cabo San Lucas Whale Watching

Thursday, January 3rd, 2008

I just noticed that between now and February 17, 2008 RCI has Last Call availability in Cabo San Lucas and San Jose del Cabo, Mexico for $199-$219 per week.  This is peak whale watching season and one of the best places in the world to watch California Gray whales from the shore.  The other two are Iceland and Antarctica-too far and too cold.

I lived in Cabo for 6 years and you can expect daytime temperatures in the mid 70′s to low 80′s while you sit on a beautiful beach watching whales cavort just off shore.  On the Pacific side of Cabo they often come in close enough to shore to hear them spout.

If you can get away, grab one of these weeks, get out of the cold and go see one of the most spectacular displays of nature you’ll ever witness.  You don’t even have to exchange your timeshare to do this.  Last call vacations are extra inventory and cancellations that RCI sells for less than a maintenance fee.  They go quickly so grab one immediately as they’ll only be around for a day or two.
