Jeff, it sounds like you got an RCI Bonus week. Bonus weeks are usually leftovers, meaning weeks that are available in resorts and areas that have more supply than demand. By definition, Florida, Caribbean, Hawaii, the coast of Mexico and anywhere tropical in the Northern Hemisphere have more demand than supply. Although the issue is hotly contested and RCI has been sued over this, the best weeks are supposed to be made available to other members of RCI to exchange into.

My advice is to grab what you can.

I once asked an II exchange consultant if one method was more effective than the other and the response was that depositing first gave more exchange power. I've always deposited first because it's worked well for me so I have no personal experience. Keep in mind, I might have gotten a different response from another consultant. Many of the consultants in II don't really know how the exchange system works because their computers automatically prioritize member's exchanges. Over the years I've gotten some really bad advice, which I didn't listen to, for II.

Do your own test. Try it one way one year and the other the next. Better yet, if you had 2 weeks in the same resort with the same exchange power, try one method with each searching for the exact same request. It's highly unlikely they'd both confirm at the same time. See which one gets confirmed first then change the search on the other week to something different.

Can anyone help in this situation ? Received an RCI certificate at a Humane Society fundraiser auction, but have been unable to find any property in Florida or Caribbean for February 2010. Even clicking the upgrade button only results in the spending $500 more for what clearly are substandard properties. We are not otherwise timeshare owners. Is it hopeless to find a decent property in February 2010?

Hi Michael,

Go to each exchange company's website and navigate their directory to see the timeshares located in the areas you're most likely to exchange to. RCI is by far, more dominant in Japan, Asia, Africa and most of Europe, so if you plan on doing a lot of exchanging to these areas then go with RCI. Also, you may be only able to sign up with one or the other. To find out, look in the directory. If your resort is listed in RCI but not II then you don't have a choice - it's RCI. If it's listed in both, and you plan on doing a lot of exchanging, I'd sign up with both. It's an extra $89/year but I think it's worth it.

It also depends on where you own and how powerful an exchange you have. If your base trading power is not so great then I'd go with RCI. If you own a very powerful trading timeshare you may want to go with II. You need to do some research. Regardless of where you own you need to get The Timeshare Exchange Bible or you'll never know how to maximize your exchange and request power.

I found it very interesting that a flight to Calgary is a better deal than a domestic flight. This information was very helpful to me. I still need to know which timeshare exchange program will be better for me RCI or II. The dilema is still there. I live in Chandler AZ.

I can't say anything about Vacation Property Marketing itself, but in my experience any company that calls you is just trying to get a listing fee from you and rarely ever really rent or sell your timeshare. There are many companies that do this.

Tell them you'll gladly let them rent or sell your timeshare if they take the $600 out of the proceeds rather than paying it up front. If they won't, that tells you everything.

What do you know about Vacation Property Marketing? I keep getting phone calls from them wanting me to list my timeshares with them. For $600.00 they will market my timeshares for rent or sale to corporations Thankyou. Bud

Aloha! Thank you for the great comments about our Kaanapali Ocean Resort Villas. Please let us know in the future if you need any information or assistance in future features regarding our Westin Vacation Ownership. FYI, we just opened a similar product in Princeville on Kauai (45 holes of golf nearby!)
