RCI Timeshare Resort: The Young Island Resort, St. Vincent and the Grenadines

Young Island Resort

I was talking with a client yesterday and he told me about a new resort in St. Vincent and the Grenadines called the Young Island Resort.  I don’t know how long it’s been affiliated with RCI as a timeshare, but not long.  The ID number is 6926 so that tells me it’s pretty new.

It seems that the gentleman and his wife and another couple have been going there for a number of years for Thanksgiving (November) and paying $2,600 for 8 nights including2 or 3 meals a day.  He is new to timeshare, he inherited it from his dad 3 years ago and has never used it, and he was shocked that he could get probably an upgraded cottage for only $189/week.

Better yet, he could use 2 exchange weeks for 2 cottages and his friends could pick up the airfare or meals.  This really got him going.

He waxed poetic about how beautiful the resort and the Grenadines were so I decided to have a look.  He was right.  The Young Island Resort is truly a piece of paradise.  The entire island is only 35 acres and the only thing on it is the resort, spa, lighted tennis courts, restaraunt and beach. No shopping and limited dining but if you’re looking for a place to just get away from it all and relax this is the spot. Young Island owns and operates Two (2) yachts, which can be chartered for a day sail to Bequia or Mustique and it’s just 200 yards from the Island of St. Vincent if you’re looking for other sightseeing opportunities.

Young Island Resort Pool

Young Island Resort Pool

RCI has listed two types of rooms; studios and 1 bedrooms. Both sleep 4, are air conditioned, have phones and internet but no televisions.  Their website lists 3 different types of cottages, of which there are 28 total, and a 2 bedroom. The daily rates start at $422/night in hurricane season and go to $1,222 for the 2 bedroom, plus tax I assume, making it a great place to do a timeshare exchange. I don’t know how many are timeshares so it would be good to ask RCI when booking.

A perfect add on before or after a week at The Young Island Resort would be to do an exchange for the Trade Winds Cruise Club or the Festiva Sailing Vacation yachts for a week. You will embark on a weeklong cruise aboard one of the club’s luxury cruising catamarans that will take you to places you could not visit on a land-based vacation. All yachts have four or five guest cabins and one for the crew, who are in charge of the yacht and all cooking. Each day sail for an hour or two after breakfast and again after lunch. You will visit different islands every day ending with cocktails and dinner in quiet bays where the yacht will moor overnight.  There is a mandatory all inclusive fee for meals on the yachts.

Once, while staying at The Crane Beach Hotel in Barbados on exchange, I nearly exteneded my vacation a week because the Trade Winds in the Grenadines was available online for the following week.  I didn’t because my wife at the time would never board anything smaller than a cruise ship.  I could kick myself now.

Make sure you maximize your exchange power and request early to take this dream vacation.

New Timeshare Resort: Grand Lodges Mount Hood Timeshare Resort

Monday, February 1st, 2010

Interval International recently announced the addition of Grand Lodge to its network of resorts.  Grand Lodges Mount Hood is tucked into Oregon’s Cascade Mountain Range just a few miles from Mt. Hood that offers year-round downhill and cross-country skiing.  The resort is being sold as fractional, with a minimum 3 week purchase, starting at $49,900.  Grand Lodges Bedroom

“The central location of Grand Lodges adjacent to three ski areas is ideal for our upscale members, who will have the opportunity to visit this high-quality ski-in/ski-out resort,” said David Gilbert, executive vice president of resort sales and marketing for Interval International. “This destination offers a wonderful variety of recreational options, including an extensive night skiing area at Mt. Hood Skibowl and summer skiing at Timberline Palmer Snow Field.”

Since it is being sold as fractional, it typically means that for exchangers we’ll have a harder time getting either the winter or summer weeks.  Fractional resorts usually package together the prime with the not so prime weeks when sold.  For instance, the 3 week package probably contains 1 winter ski week, 1 summer week and 1 spring or fall week.  The week most likely to get deposited with Interval International is the spring or fall week-at least for the first 4 or 5 years.  After that, we can expect to see some winter and summer weeks up for exchange.

If you jump on it right away, it’s possible to exchange into the Grand Lodges, even in prime time, because the developer’s usually have more inventory than owners.  They give some of that inventory to II to fill their rooms and as a way to market them as well.  But you’ll need to jump on it now and maximize your exchange power.

The resort has 16 open-plan units with three different floor plans that range from 1,800 to 2,300 square feet.  The units include three bedrooms, a gourmet kitchen, and a private balcony with access from the master bedroom and living room, as well as offer a rustic elegant style with Brazilian cherry hardwood floors and Cascadian stone fireplaces in most units.

The developer of Grand Lodges and managing member of Mt. Hood LLC II, Kirk Hanna says, “Our vision was to create the ultimate balance between a getaway retreat and a comfortable home,” Kirk Hanna is also the owner of Mt. Hood Skibowl and continued to say, “Units are acoustically engineered to give owners a quiet appreciation of the stunning panoramas. The on-site recreation center and full-service concierge and spa will provide first-class pampering. And, our affiliation with Interval International completes the picture by expanding our owners’ vacation options to other quality locations worldwide.”

Disney names its Hawaii resort ‘Aulani’

Sunday, January 24th, 2010
The new Disney hotel and timeshare resort is progressing nicely. They’ve given its first family destination resort in Hawaii a Hawaiian name — Aulani.

Disney Senior Vice President Joe Rohde said Tuesday that “aulani” means “the place that speaks for the great ones” or “the place that speaks with deep messages.”

Located on 21 acres of oceanfront property in the Ko Olina Resort & Marina development, Aulani is to include 360 hotel rooms and 481 timeshare vacation villas. The first phase is to open in fall 2011.

Recreational highlights include pools, hot tubs, a snorkeling lagoon, play programs for children and a river suitable for tube floating.

The resort will also have an 18,000-square-foot spa, two restaurants, a 14,545-square-foot conference center and 48,685 square feet of outdoor venues.

With 481 timeshare villas expect to see some weeks showing up in RCI available for exchange.  Unfortunately, it will take 3-5 years before any appreciable amount weeks are deposited.  And you’ll have to really supercharge your exchange power and request very early to have a chance of getting in.Disney Timeshare Resort Hawaii

In addition, the fourth installment of the popular Disney movie, “Pirates of the Caribbean” series is scheduled for filming in Hawaii during the summer of 2010. Johnny Depp will return to his role as Captain Jack Sparrow in “On Stranger Tides.” The film, produced by Jerry Bruckheimer, is estimated to mean roughly $85 million to the economy of Hawaii.

New Welk Timeshare Resort in Cabo San Lucas-Sirena del Mar

Sunset in Cabo San Lucas

Interval International, a leading global provider of vacation services and an operating segment of Interval Leisure Group (Nasdaq:IILG), yesterday announced that Welk Resorts Cabo – Sirena del Mar has joined its vacation exchange network. Overlooking the Sea of Cortez near Cabo San Lucas, Mexico, this is the first international location in the Welk Resorts portfolio launched by legendary entertainer Lawrence Welk.

“Those familiar with the Welk history know that we strive to ensure whatever we do at our resorts is done with the highest quality standards,” said Jon Fredricks, president of Welk Resorts. “Welk Resorts Cabo – Sirena del Mar, the newest addition to our family of resorts, clearly exemplifies this commitment to excellence.”

Craig M. Nash, chairman, president, and chief executive officer of Interval Leisure Group, parent company of Interval International, added, “We are very proud to welcome Welk Resorts Cabo – Sirena del Mar, Welk’s sixth property, to Interval’s worldwide network. The resort’s stunning location and full range of amenities carry on the tradition of quality that has made Welk Resorts one of the most respected independent brands in the vacation ownership industry.”

Set on a 65-foot bluff near the popular resort town of Cabo San Lucas on the tip of the Baja California peninsula, Welk Resorts Cabo – Sirena del Mar is being built in tiers to maximize its panoramic views of the Sea of Cortez and El Arco, the landmark stone arch. There are two pools on the seven-acre property and cascading decks have wet wall water features, a vanishing edge waterfall and spa, thatched palapas, and a fire pit. At the rim of the seaside cliff, a spiral staircase leads to a swimmable cove beach.

While the setting may be a world away from other resorts in the Welk Resorts portfolio — including the Welk Resort north of the San Diego suburb of Escondido, the 400-acre flagship property, and the Ozark Mountain-themed Timber Ridge Lodge in the heart of family-friendly Branson, Missouri — the quality and flexible, points-based product is very familiar to more than 43,000 owners at Welk Resorts. Sixteen of the 20 two-bedroom villas in phase one of Welk Resorts Cabo – Sirena del Mar are lock-off units, adding another layer of flexibility. (The remaining four units are two-bedroom penthouses.) The build out is scheduled to progress in five phases for a total of 222 units with a range of configurations, including one-bedroom junior suites.

All units will include luxury amenities such as whirlpool tubs, stainless appliances, multiple flat screen TVs, complimentary Internet access, and pillow-top king-sized beds.

Phase one owners and guests will be able to enjoy a range of on-site amenities including two outdoor pools (one with a swim-up bar), a fitness center, game room, an owner’s lounge and shop selling beverages and sundries. Just five minutes from the property, Cabo San Lucas offers the full spectrum of shopping, dining, golf and water sports.

American Idol Star and Cabo San Lucas Timeshares

Saturday, January 9th, 2010

Cabo San Lucas' El Arco

Katharine McPhee, runner up in Season 5 of American Idol, says her favorite places to relax are Cabo San Lucas, Mexico timeshares. Her heavy-duty travel schedule keeps her in and out of hotels, many of which this self-professed “clean freak” says she re-cleans herself because they do not meet her standards. Explaining that she always removes the spreads and blankets and relegate them to the closet, McPhee adds that she sometimes uses the hotel towels to cover a dirty floor or carpet.

It seems, however, that timeshares suit the singing star much better. In an article published by Showbiz Spy, McPhee says her favorite resort destination is, “Cabo (San Lucas, Mexico) because it’s two hours from my home in Los Angeles and you feel like you are in a different world. It’s quick and easy and I love the restaurants. My family has a timeshare so I try and get down there at least once per year.”

“Lying on the beach or sitting by the pool is so amazing. Every once in a while I will rent jet skis. There is nothing quite like jet skiing on the open ocean.”

Katharine is not alone in her love of Mexico timeshares; many vacationers believe them to be some of the most beautiful resorts in the world. And you have it straight from a clean freak that although many hotels fail to live up to her standards, her favorite Mexico timeshare is an ideal place to vacation and relax.

The newest resort to open in Cabo is Welk Resorts “Sirena del Mar”.  They grabbed about the last piece of ocean front left in the coveted corridor area some years ago and just opened 35 of 200 units.  It sits 3 miles from the town of Cabo San Lucas and all of the first phase units have ocean front views.  In fact, because of its location, not only can you hear whales spout from the pool area, but at this time of year you can see both sunrise and sunset.

Welk has deposited some exchange weeks into Interval International but don’t expect them to last long.  Nor will there be many weeks from their Cabo resort deposited in the future since Welk went to a club system with internal points like Disney Vacation Club and Hyatt Vacation Club.

Make sure you maximize your exchange power and request far in advance if you want to get a timeshare exchange into the beautiful new resort.

Westgate Planet Hollywood Timeshare Opens

Monday, December 21st, 2009
Westgate Planet Hollywood Towers

Westgate Planet Hollywood Towers

The long-awaited 52-story Westgate residential, vacation ownership, and timeshare resort, PH Towers at Planet Hollywood, officially opened this week.  Grand opening of the 1,200 room resort began with room availability to timeshare owners and will be followed on December 28 by rooms available to the general public.

The first 20 timeshare owners of Planet Hollywood’s PH Towers by Westgate checked in Friday morning, marking the first of several residential tower openings over the next few months.

Westgate Resorts Chief Operating Officer Mark Waltrip said the tower is open this week for the 200 timeshare owners who purchased for the last two weeks of 2009. An estimated 500 units will be open by Christmas with the rest of the tower open by Jan. 1, Waltrip said.

The resort’s timeshare units account for approximately 20 percent of the total number of rooms at the property and include studio timeshare units, and one and two bedroom timeshare units. Many feature dramatic city views with floor to ceiling windows, marble accented bathrooms, spa tubs, and other luxury amenities.  But perhaps the real draw of Las Vegas timeshare at the PH Towers is its location at the heart of the Vegas Strip, on four acres next to the Miracle Mile Shops. At build out, you’ll find some 170 specialty stores and thirty restaurants in what Westgate timeshares describes as “retail bliss” for the “semipro shopper”.

Ownership amenities including an exotic tropical pool complete with sandy beach and private cabanas, an elite 46th floor pool for the exclusive penthouse suites, and a world class fitness facility, restaurants, onsite casino and marketplace/deli.

About 80 percent of the tower will be used as hotel rooms and will welcome guests Dec. 28 and officially celebrate the tower’s grand opening in early January.  Waltrip said rates will range from the low $100s to $600s. Guests will have direct access to Planet Hollywood Resort and Casino and Miracle Mile Shops.

The Resort will be connected to the Planet Hollywood Resort and Casino which will give our guests direct access to amenities such as the all new Planet Hollywood Casino, twelve premium restaurants featuring an eclectic range of cuisine and a full-service shopping mall with over 140 shops.

Interval International is the exchange company for the PH Towers at Planet Hollywood.  Typically, for a new timeshare of this quality, I’d expect it would be a difficult exchange, but Westgate is going through some difficult times and is getting a lot of bad press.  There are already many resales for this property and it just opened so after the initial rush of owners wanting to stay there I think we’ll see good exchange availability.

Exchange Your Timeshare To Exotic Dubai

Thursday, November 19th, 2009

Palm Island Jumeirah

Palm Island Jumeirah

How about doing something really out there next year for your timeshare exchange by going to Dubai instead of Orlando?  Come to think of it, Dubai just may  be the Orlando of Arabia- as opposed to the Lawrence- although much more upscale.  Timeshares are big business in Dubai and Interval International has 4  resorts there under affiliation.

Considered the 8th wonder of the world, the man-made Palm Island is what put Dubai on the map as a tourist destination.  It consists of a trunk, a crown with 17 fronds, and a surrounding crescent island that forms an 11 kilometer-long breakwater. The island itself is 5 kilometers by 5 kilometers. It will add 78 kilometers to the Dubai coastline. The first phase of development on the Palm Jumeirah will create 4,000 residences with a combination of villas and apartments over the next 3 to 4 years.

The Royal Club at Palm-Jumeirah is located on the western side of the trunk-considered the hub of Palm Island.  A 50 meter wide canal gently weaves its way down the trunk past boutique hotels, upscale designer shops and restaurants and some of the priciest real estate in the world.

Another wonder to behold in Dubai is the Burj al Arab, one of the tallest and certainly most unique hotels in the world.

One of the tallest hotels in the world

One of the tallest hotels in the world

Construction of Burj Al Arab began in 1994. It was built to resemble the sail of a dhow a type of Arabian vessel. Two “wings” spread in a V to form a vast “mast”, while the space between them is enclosed in a massive atrium.

Burj Al Arab promotes itself as the world’s only “7-star” property and while that designation doesn’t really exist in the hotel rating system it is certainly one of the most opulent hotels in the world.  The rooms start at $1,000/night and go up to $28,000.  In fact, they charge $75 just to go in and see it.

Other activities include moonlight cruises, golf, desert safari, all manner of water sports, indoor snow skiing and world class duty free shopping and dining.  You’ll want to go in the winter and avoid the Arab holy holiday of Ramadan.  You’ll need to supercharge your exchange power first and request at least a year in advance to get a timeshare so now’s the time to get going for winter 2011.

I expect RCI will affiliate some timeshare resorts but for now Interval International has a lock on things.  But Dubai is an international hot spot for tourism and timeshare is becoming a major part of the room mix.

Disney to Add 4 New Resorts

Tuesday, June 9th, 2009

Disney’s plans to open 4 new resorts this year constitute the most ambitious expansion yet for Disney Vacation Club, its 17-year-old time-share arm.

There will be three new Central Florida properties along with 50 new units that will open later this year at Disneyland in Anaheim, Calif.

Sales prices are starting at about $18,000, plus a monthly maintenance fee. It is the first time Disney has been selling interests in four time shares at once.

According to the Orlando Sentinel,

“Although the resorts are opening within 100 days of one another, each is unique:

•At Kidani Village, which will eventually have 340 units, walls are decorated with African proverbs and artifacts such as a Bamileke king’s belt and Cameroon royal drinking horns. Most rooms overlook a re-created savanna complete with giraffes, zebras, ostriches and other wildlife.

•The 60 Treehouse Villas stand on pedestals and stilts in a forested wetland. The octagonal suites replace earlier lodging originally built in 1975, and designers say the new units use 70 percent less impervious concrete.

•Bay Lake Tower rises 15 stories just outside the gates of the Magic Kingdom and is linked to Disney’s Contemporary Resort by a pedestrian bridge. The sales pitch centers around the views; the largest suites have windows two stories tall.

Disney is also building more time shares beyond Central Florida. In addition to the Villas at Disney’s Grand Californian Hotel & Spa, which are scheduled to open late this year, Disney this year began construction of an 830-room resort in Hawaii, in which more than half of the rooms will be time shares. That resort will open in 2011.

And earlier this month, Disney announced the purchase of 15 acres just outside Washington with plans to build a family resort. Although Disney has not released details, it is likely that project will also include Vacation Club villas.”

Venice Houseboats in RCI

Monday, May 25th, 2009

Rialto Bridge

Have you ever wanted to see Venice, one of the greatest cities in the word?  If so, then you may be able to do it by water.  Map Destinations has embarked on its first development project which it is preparing to launch in the coming weeks.  Venice on Water, which has been described as “one of the most unusual timeshare properties yet” by RCI is about to set sail in Venice-Italy’s most celebrated province.

According to an article in Owner’s Perspective Magazine, “The project is based around a small fleet of custom-built luxury houseboats that will be moored in a strategic and central location within very close proximity of the iconic city of Venice. Apart from offering an innovative and easy way of cruising on the most famous lagoon in Europe, these houseboats also enable members to enjoy a luxurious boating lifestyle without needing to find the capital, maintenance and management costs to support full-time boat ownership. The first of 10 vessels which has been purpose-built in Malta shall be unveiled in June 2009.”

Venice Houseboat

This first houseboat shall be moored at the marina Darsena DEC which is only 5km away from the Venice city centre and offers guests various services and facilities including water and electricity supply and protection from winds and tides. The houseboats, measuring ten by three and a half metres, can accommodate up to six guests and are easy to manoeuvre and handle with no licence or experience required. Anyone wanting to jump aboard can hire their own skipper for an extra fee or can opt to learn the ropes in a couple of hours.”

Of course, they will be extremely difficult to get on exchange, especially during good weather, so get your requests to RCI in early.

Interval International Adds Grand SolMar in Cabo San Lucas

Tuesday, April 21st, 2009

Interval International has announced that it will add the Grand SolMar resort in Cabo San Lucas to its portfolio.  Scheduled to begin construction in March, the oceanfront resort will be adjacent to the renowned Arch of Los Cabos at the southernmost tip of the Baja Peninsula.

Grand Sol Mar

According to Perspective Magazine, “Grand SolMar will include 250 villas with unobstructed views of the Pacific Ocean and its landscaped gardens upon completion. Phase I of the project will include 104 units that are scheduled for occupancy in winter 2011 and phase II, which will have 96 additional units, is expected to be completed two years later. The final phase, with 50 units, is slated for occupancy in winter 2015.”

I worked for the SolMar group when I lived in Cabo some years ago and you can expect the Grand SolMar to be one of finest timeshares in II when it opens if they stay true to form.  And I’m sure they will.

They started developing timeshare many years ago with one of my favorite resorts in Cabo, the Sol Mar Beach Club Resort as an addition to their already famous hotel.  To this day the Sol Mar Beach Club is my choice of timeshare resorts to exchange to.  It’s small and quiet and very well maintained and is affiliated with RCI.

The SolMar group next built the beautiful Playa Grande just up the beach from the Sol Mar and is an exceptional resort to exchange to.  It is bigger, has more amenities and definitely has the resort feel to it.

It’s been a while since I’ve been to Cabo but you shouldn’t expect to find the crime and violence that’s occurring in the border towns near the US.  The Sol Mar Beach Club used to have 24 hour security although I never felt it needed it.  If you’re concerned you should call the resort directly and ask.

What you do need to be aware of is the very dangerous beach the Sol Mar Resorts are on.  The beach is definitely not recommended for swimming.  Many people have drowned there, so be warned.  It is, however,  one of the best beaches in the world from which to watch whales.  Best time for that is February and March.

More on this in the next post.
