How to Get 4th of July When Exchanging With RCI or Interval International

Wednesday, July 8th, 2009

The 4th of July is one of the most difficult weeks to get on exchange in either RCI or Interval International. Now that the 2009 holiday is over you should be putting in your exchange request today for 4th of July 2010. The longer you wait,  the less chances you have of getting it.

Many timeshare owners don’t get around to putting in their exchange requests until after they receive their annual HOA bill. And typically that bill arrives in January of each year. Only those owners that have very powerful trading timeshares will be able to get 4th of July 2010 if they wait until next year to put in their request.

You should never wait until you receive your HOA bill to pay it. If you really want to increase your exchange power you should always request next year’s vacation this year. And that means you’ll have to pre-pay next year’s HOAs now. Many timeshare owners are unaware that they can do this so they wait. And as a consequence, they have less likelihood of getting what they want on exchange.

Most timeshare companies will let you pre-pay you HOA’s by credit card over the phone. Or you may be able to send in a check. But doing it that way will probably delay you getting in your exchange request by several weeks while your payment is being processed. And the longer you delay putting in your request the less your chances of getting confirmed.

Another thing to consider when requesting 4th of July week is that you’ll only be giving RCI or Interval International 1 week to search for. This adds another degree of difficulty to and already difficult exchange request. To offset this you need to increase the amount of resorts you’re willing to take. A good strategy to use to do this is to request 4th of July week in several different resort areas instead of just one.

For instance, you could request 8 resorts in Vail, Colorado, 6 in Whistler, British Colombia, 10 on the California coast and 8 on the Oregon coast. By doing this you would increase your odds of getting confirmed enormously.

So get going for next year’s 4th of July holiday now.  I’ve found that the timeshare owners that typically exchange for holiday weeks are planners by nature.  And they are some of the savviest timeshare exchangers in the industry.  The best way to compete with them is to get in your request early and to give a lot of resort choices.

Salmon Falls Resort – Ketchikan, Alaska

Tuesday, May 19th, 2009

I just found a real rarity in the timeshare exchange world.  The Salmon Falls Resort in Ketchikan Alaska is listed in RCI’s Last Call vacations.  As far as I know it’s the only timeshare in Alaska in either RCI or Interval International, and in over 21 years in the business, I’ve never heard of anyone exchanging to Alaska.

There are 4 rooms available as of this post and you can pick them up for only $199 per week.  The big shock is that they’re available from late May through July 5th of 2009.  Of course, they won’t last long, so you need to jump on them immediately.

Salmon Falls Ketchikan, Alaska

All of the rooms in the Salmon Falls Resort are hotel units and there is a mandatory all inclusive charge for meals of $899 per person for adults and $499 for children.  That would add up to $2,000 for the week for 2 adults.  I checked their website and the same package would be over $4,200!

According to their website,

“Our main hotel building is constructed of rustic Montana Pine. The rooms in our main hotel are large and comfortable. You will get the feeling of the wilderness, but with all the creature comforts. Each room has two double beds, a private bath, and a telephone. We also offer triple rooms. These rooms have three double beds, wireless internet, a private bath, and a telephone.

Our other hotel building also has large comfortable rooms. Each room has two queen beds, wireless internet, a private bath and a telephone. Some adjoining rooms are available. Daily maid service is provided in our hotels.

We serve the finest beef and freshest Alaskan seafood all in a secluded pristine setting surrounded by magnificent scenery.
Our restaurant seats 180 and has a panoramic view of Behm Canal, Clover Passage, and the cascading Salmon Falls waterfall. Located within the restaurant is our comfortable lounge.”

Grab one of these great RCI deals before they’re gone!

Disney Vacation Club, Getaways and RCI

Monday, May 4th, 2009

As many of you know from an earlier blog post of mine, Disney Vacation Club has left Interval International and affiliated with RCI.  Years ago Disney was with RCI and left it for Interval International.

So why the change back to RCI?  I was just looking on the RCI website at Getaways and noticed that Disney Vacation Club  has its very own separate listing and tab to click.

rcidisneytab2

The lowest price for a “Getaway” is  $503.99  for a studio for 3 nights in the Disney Old Key West Resort.  There’s only one at that price and check is May 27.  That’s a great deal and I hope one of my reader’s grabs it.

Disney Key West Resort

Disney Key West Resort

There are 428 Getaways in Disney Resorts at the time of this post, but only a few are really good deals because they are last minute.  If you want anything other than last minute then 3 nights will cost you $1,100-$1400 for a 1 bedroom, $2,000-$2,400 for  a 2 bedroom and $3,300 for a 2 bedroom  checking in December 20 and checking out December 24.  These are all in the Disney Old Key West Resort.

You want a week at Disney’s Animal Kingdom over Christmas?  Then be prepared to fork over $8,171.99 for a 2 bedroom.  I’d like to know who RCI thinks will buy these expensive weeks and where they’re getting all this inventory from since most of it is from sold out resorts like the Old Key West?

My suspicion is that RCI made a deal with Disney Vacation Clubs to not only give them prominent advertising but to also rent out their owners week and might be one of the reasons they left Interval International.  Who knows?

Keep your eyes peeled for more cheap, last minute getaways in the Disney Resorts now that they’re part of RCI.  I’ve always found the extra vacations in Interval International to be more expensive.  But you’ll have to act fast when you see something like 3 nights for $500.

Interval International to Launch Short Stay Exchange

Monday, April 6th, 2009

Big news for Interval International and its members.  According to Perspective Magazine, the industry’s most read B2B publication, II members will soon be able to exchange for less than a week.  According to II it’s set to launch this spring, but other than the article in Perspective Magazine, (see below) details are lacking.

There’s nothing on the Interval International website yet but according to the article this option will only be available to Interval Gold members.  I’ve never been a fan of Interval’s Gold membership.  It costs an extra $54/year but this may now be worth it to many timeshare owners looking to take shorter, more frequent vacations.

How well it will work is yet to be determined.  If an Interval Gold member books 4 days in a resort, the entire week has to be taken out of inventory for all II members.

Read the article below for a little more detail and save Perspective Magazine in your favorites.  It’s a great timeshare resource to keep up to date with what’s happening in the timeshare industry.

According to Perspective Magazine,

“A leading global provider of vacation services, will debut its online ”ShortStay Exchange” program this spring, giving its upgraded, Interval Gold® members the opportunity to vacation in shorter increments.

“With today’s hectic schedules and tighter budgets, many consumers are opting for weekend or four-day vacations. “ShortStay Exchange”  allows us to provide great value to our members by expanding the overall flexibility of the vacation ownership product,” said Sharon Freed, senior vice president of consumer marketing for with Interval International. This enhancement also will be a great selling feature at Interval-affiliated resorts, since it offers buyers the chance to tailor their vacation time to fit their needs.”

In fact, the “ShortStay Exchange”  program reflects emerging consumer travel preferences. Research findings from the 2008 National Leisure Travel MONITOR show that “weekend trips” (defined as trips of four nights or less that include a Saturday) now represent 53 percent of all vacations taken by Americans.

Another program benefit is that the shorter stay encourages Interval Gold members, whether they transact in weeks or points, to trade their time for accommodations at resorts they have not previously visited, thus broadening their experiences within Interval’s ever-expanding network.”

Interval International Resort Availablility for Easter 2009

Thursday, February 5th, 2009

Interval International just posted spring exchange availability including resorts available for this Easter.  Easter timeshare weeks are some of the hardest to get so you want to act now before they’re gone.

There are only a few locations available for Easter in ski and beach resorts so get going now.

See the list below for availability.

The first 3 months of each year is what I call exchange season.  Interval Interantional and RCI receive a big bulk of timeshare owners depositing their weeks into the timeshare exchange pool at this time.  The best resorts and weeks are snapped up immediately by savvy timeshare exchangers that have maximized their exchange and request power.

Interval International Adds New Property in Puerta Vallarta

Monday, December 29th, 2008

Interval International has just affiliated the Grand Luxxe Residence Club, aka “timeshare”, located just 20 minutes north of Puerto Vallarta.

It is listed in the 2009 Resort Directory but as “under construction”.  Since there’s little detail you might overlook it when requesting a timeshare exchange.

Interval International describes the resort as “having spacious suites…with 12 foot ceilings, white leather, imported wood, polished stone and large-screen plasma televisions.  Units are offered with a private pool, a hammock, and lounge chair on the balcony from which you can watch the breathtaking sunsets.”

Those of you that have supercharged your exchange power have the best chance of exchanging to it.  Remember to request as far in advance as possible for this elegant resort.

Disney Vacation Club Affiliates with RCI

Thursday, December 11th, 2008

It looks like the Disney Vacation Club has signed a multi-year contract with Group RCI, a timeshare exchange company.

Effective, January 1, 2009, RCI will be the exclusive exchange provider for Disney Vacation Club timeshare members. Under the terms of the new agreement, timeshare owners at Disney Vacation Club will be able to use their Disney Vacation Club timeshare points to book timeshare at RCI resorts all over the world.

The Disney Vacation Club was originnaly affiliated with RCI but switched to Interval International in the late1990′s.  I wonder if some of the other major brand named hotel timeshares like Marriott, Hyatt and Westin may follow?

Exchanging Disney timeshares through RCI will enable Disney owners to book timeshare at non-Disney resorts. At the same time, it gives some members of RCI timeshare exchange the ability to exchange their timeshares for stays at the Disney Vacation Club.

I’ll be curious to see which RCI members will be able to do this.  Will it be RCI weeks members or points members?  Or will the Disney Timeshares be listed in the RCI’s exclusive Registry Collection? Regardless, only timeshare owners that know how to maximize their exchange power will ever get in.

A spokesperson for Disney timeshare says the decision to switch Disney’s exchange affiliation from Interval International to RCI exchange will provide Disney timeshare members with “‘a significantly broader range of resort experiences,’ including access to destinations across six continents and 25 countries.”

Disney believes they will be able to attract more people to buy timeshare at the Disney resorts, by being able to offer access to a wider array of timeshare exchange.

The Prospector at Aspen

Wednesday, November 12th, 2008

Here’s something I’ve rarely seen in 18 years. RCI has one Extra Vacation week in the Prospector in Aspen. It’s in a one bedroom that sleeps 6 maximum and RCI is charging $548.99 for the week. Check-in is November 30 2008.

Move quickly if you want this. There is already almost 2 feet of base with more snow on the way.

This is one of the best deals I’ve ever seen for RCI Extra Vacations and although the Prospector is a little old, you can’t beat the location. It’s right in the heart of the town.

Each unit features a beautiful view of Aspen Mountain, deck or patio, a sauna, whirlpool spa, fireplace, Internet access, television with VCR, telephone and a partial kitchen with an under counter refrigerator, microwave oven, electric skillet, garbage disposal and no conventional oven. All units are 1BR OCC: Max 4/Pri 4 with 1 bath, 1 queen bed and 1 Murphy bed. No pets are allowed at the resort. It is not necessary to have a car, as most attractions are within walking distance.

I just checked the Prospector’s rental rate for the same dates and the room is listed at $275/night plus tax. You’d pay $2,100/week at that rate or you can get it now from RCI for only $549. A great deal.

The only other timeshare in Aspen is the Hyatt Grand Aspen in Interval International.

Marriott Canyon Villas at Desert Ridge Scottsdale

Thursday, November 6th, 2008

Interval International has Getaway weeks available at the fabulous Marriott’s Canyon Villas at Desert Ridge in Phoenix, AZ. for December and January.  Christmas and New Years are excluded, of course, and only studio units are available but the price is only $454/week.  That’s only $65/night to stay in one of the nicest resorts in the Phoenix and Scottsdale area.

Here’s Marriott’s description of the resort:

“Rising from the inspiring Sonoran Desert of Phoenix, Arizona, Marriott’s Canyon Villas at Desert Ridge is a traveler’s oasis. With full access to the amenities of the neighboring JW Marriott Desert Ridge Resort & Spa, spend a memorable day on the links at Wildfire, indulge at the 28,000-square-foot European spa or enjoy some of the finest dining in the Southwest. Retreat to the amazing amenities of your spacious two-bedroom, two-bath villa designed for comfort and with style.”

Average high temperature in December and January is 67 degrees making it pleasant for the many outdoor activities made available in this unique desert area. You can check out the many shops and restaurants at the Desert Ridge Marketplace conveniently located just across from the Marriott.

Grab these weeks while you can because they will go fast

Marriott’s Maui Ocean Club Getaway Week

Thursday, May 29th, 2008

Marriott’s Maui Ocean Club is available for a Getaway week in Interval International from July 12-19.  Only studios are available at this writing and you can pick it up for only $886/week.  That’s only $126.57/night for a $500/night room.  Act quickly before it’s gone.

Marriott’s Maui Ocean Club is one of the most difficult timeshare resorts in Interval International to exchange in to.  One reason is because the people who buy there spend a substantial amount for their purchase and are therefore less likely to want to exchange it somewhere else.

Another reason it is such a difficult timeshare exchange is because of the sweetheart deal Marriott has with Interval International.  When any Marriott owner deposits a week with Interval International it goes into a separate exchange pool for 30 days that is made available exclusively to other Marriott owners.  This drastically reduces the amount of weeks made available to non-Marriott owners and is very unfair.

Of course another reason it’s such a difficult timeshare exchange is because of the demand for Hawaii in general, and Maui in particular.  The waiting list for Marriott’s Maui Ocean Club is enormous and you must have both a very powerful exchanging timeshare and to have maximized your exchange power to be placed high enough up on the wait list to get confirmed.

To learn how to maximize your exchange power in both Interval International and RCI Click Here Now.

Marriott’s Maui Ocean Club is one of my favorite timeshare properties.  The views of the island of Lanai or the West Maui Mountains are incredible.  It’s location right on Kaanapali Beach is one of the best and besides the restaurants on site, you are a short walking distance to Whaler’s Village for access to many more shops and restaurants. Don’t miss the old whaling village of Lahaina Town nearby.

Don’t miss this rare chance to visit one of the most beautiful islands in the world and stay at one of Interval International’s best timeshare resorts.
