Swine Flu and Cancelling Your Timeshare Exchange

Tuesday, April 28th, 2009

Man, has Mexico’s tourism been hit with a million pound sledge hammer or what.  First travelers were avoiding it because of all the drug violence and now all over the news they’re saying only go if you have to.  I feel for my friends still living and working in Cabo now.

So what should you do if you have a confirmed exchange with RCI or II to Mexico coming up and want to cancel?  Well unless they have some sympathy and re-credit your week back without restrictions, you’re going to be hit hard.  And the closer it is to you check in date, the worse it gets.

It’s possible that one or both companies will be more lenient in this case.  They have been in the past when hurricane Wilma hit Cancun in 2005 and Katrina hit New Orleans the same year.  But both companies really want you to buy their vacation insurance so I’m not so sure they’ll be so lenient in this case.

RCI’s policy states that:  “Any change to your confirmed travel dates constitutes cancellation of your exchange and is subject to our standard cancellation guidelines. When cancellation is made 61 days or more prior to your confirmed travel dates, $129 USD ($137 CAD) of your original exchange fee is retained by RCI. Should cancellation be requested 60 days or fewer prior to travel, no portion of your exchange fee is refundable. However, in either case, your deposited week will be eligible for a new exchange. ”

II really sticks it to you.  If you cancel 60 days or more in advance, your week is credited back but you only have up until your original check in date to use it.  And you pay another exchange fee of course.  If you cancel a confirmed exchange between 59 and 14 days in advance you only have 59 days to re-book it.

Cancel13 to 7 days in advance and you only have 30 days to use that week.  Cancel 6 days or less and you lost it.  If you own a very desirable timeshare I’d negotiate these cancellation terms.

While you can’t plan for an unexpected flu outbreak you can for hurricanes and tropical storms.  If you plan on traveling to any tropical destination in the northern hemisphere between May and November you should consider getting cancellation insurance from RCI or II.  Especially for the month of September.  75% of hurricanes occur in the Atlantic  in this month.

Hurricane season in the southern hemisphere is just the opposite of course-from November through April.  Peak season is February and March.

In my Deluxe versions of the Timeshare Exchange Bibles I not only break down the very  best times to travel to timeshares worldwide by month saving you hours of research, but also where and when the worst weather will occur.  It also has a complete planning guide for what to do if caught in a natural disaster while on vacation.  It’s a great resource.

Interval International Adds Grand SolMar in Cabo San Lucas

Tuesday, April 21st, 2009

Interval International has announced that it will add the Grand SolMar resort in Cabo San Lucas to its portfolio.  Scheduled to begin construction in March, the oceanfront resort will be adjacent to the renowned Arch of Los Cabos at the southernmost tip of the Baja Peninsula.

Grand Sol Mar

According to Perspective Magazine, “Grand SolMar will include 250 villas with unobstructed views of the Pacific Ocean and its landscaped gardens upon completion. Phase I of the project will include 104 units that are scheduled for occupancy in winter 2011 and phase II, which will have 96 additional units, is expected to be completed two years later. The final phase, with 50 units, is slated for occupancy in winter 2015.”

I worked for the SolMar group when I lived in Cabo some years ago and you can expect the Grand SolMar to be one of finest timeshares in II when it opens if they stay true to form.  And I’m sure they will.

They started developing timeshare many years ago with one of my favorite resorts in Cabo, the Sol Mar Beach Club Resort as an addition to their already famous hotel.  To this day the Sol Mar Beach Club is my choice of timeshare resorts to exchange to.  It’s small and quiet and very well maintained and is affiliated with RCI.

The SolMar group next built the beautiful Playa Grande just up the beach from the Sol Mar and is an exceptional resort to exchange to.  It is bigger, has more amenities and definitely has the resort feel to it.

It’s been a while since I’ve been to Cabo but you shouldn’t expect to find the crime and violence that’s occurring in the border towns near the US.  The Sol Mar Beach Club used to have 24 hour security although I never felt it needed it.  If you’re concerned you should call the resort directly and ask.

What you do need to be aware of is the very dangerous beach the Sol Mar Resorts are on.  The beach is definitely not recommended for swimming.  Many people have drowned there, so be warned.  It is, however,  one of the best beaches in the world from which to watch whales.  Best time for that is February and March.

More on this in the next post.

Lawrence Welk’s Mountain Villas

Monday, April 13th, 2009

I just got back from a 3 day stay at Lawrence Welk’s Mountain Villas, the newest resort on their north San Diego property. This is one of the nicest timeshares in either RCI or II. Here’s II’s resort description:

“Nestled in the foothills of North San Diego, just a short drive from world-famous attractions and sunny beaches, Welk Resorts San Diego offers a panoramic 640-acre vacation playground with dozens of family-friendly activities right on-site. The newest of all of the Welk villa communities, Mountain Villas offers beautiful cabin-style villas set high up on the mountainside, with spectacular views of the sprawling fairways and natural open spaces for which Welk Resorts San Diego are renowned in Southern California.”

There are only about 43 villas open at this time with new phases planned, so it will be a very difficult exchange-especially anytime during the summer. Your best chances are any other time of the year. Make sure you maximize your exchange power and plan 9-12 months in advance.

All units are 2 bedroom lock-offs consisting of a large one bedroom villa that’s approximately 850 square feet and a one bedroom suite that is about 584 square feet. Each one bedroom sleeps 4. Here are some pictures of the Villa:

There are 3 different resorts on this property in Escondido.  You’d enjoy any one of them.  Those of you that want the newest Mountain Villas be sure to request code WMX in Interval International.  The other 2 resorts on this property are Villas on the Greens and the original Lawrence Welk Resort Villas.  You’ll find them in both RCI and Interval International.

Interval International to Launch Short Stay Exchange

Monday, April 6th, 2009

Big news for Interval International and its members.  According to Perspective Magazine, the industry’s most read B2B publication, II members will soon be able to exchange for less than a week.  According to II it’s set to launch this spring, but other than the article in Perspective Magazine, (see below) details are lacking.

There’s nothing on the Interval International website yet but according to the article this option will only be available to Interval Gold members.  I’ve never been a fan of Interval’s Gold membership.  It costs an extra $54/year but this may now be worth it to many timeshare owners looking to take shorter, more frequent vacations.

How well it will work is yet to be determined.  If an Interval Gold member books 4 days in a resort, the entire week has to be taken out of inventory for all II members.

Read the article below for a little more detail and save Perspective Magazine in your favorites.  It’s a great timeshare resource to keep up to date with what’s happening in the timeshare industry.

According to Perspective Magazine,

“A leading global provider of vacation services, will debut its online ”ShortStay Exchange” program this spring, giving its upgraded, Interval Gold® members the opportunity to vacation in shorter increments.

“With today’s hectic schedules and tighter budgets, many consumers are opting for weekend or four-day vacations. “ShortStay Exchange”  allows us to provide great value to our members by expanding the overall flexibility of the vacation ownership product,” said Sharon Freed, senior vice president of consumer marketing for with Interval International. This enhancement also will be a great selling feature at Interval-affiliated resorts, since it offers buyers the chance to tailor their vacation time to fit their needs.”

In fact, the “ShortStay Exchange”  program reflects emerging consumer travel preferences. Research findings from the 2008 National Leisure Travel MONITOR show that “weekend trips” (defined as trips of four nights or less that include a Saturday) now represent 53 percent of all vacations taken by Americans.

Another program benefit is that the shorter stay encourages Interval Gold members, whether they transact in weeks or points, to trade their time for accommodations at resorts they have not previously visited, thus broadening their experiences within Interval’s ever-expanding network.”
